The Story Behind This Cake

For many Brazilians, carrot cake isn't topped with cream cheese frosting: it's covered in chocolate. The contrast between the bright orange cake and the dark chocolate topping has become one of the most recognizable and beloved combinations in Brazilian baking.

A cherished staple of homemade kitchens across Brazil, this simple and comforting cake is known for its vibrant colour, achieved by blending fresh carrots directly into the batter, and its rich chocolate topping. Served at birthday parties, afternoon coffees, and family gatherings, it's one of the country's most beloved homemade treats.

While modern versions are sometimes finished with chocolate ganache, we stay true to the rustic tradition many Brazilians grew up with: a glossy chocolate glaze made with cocoa, sugar, and butter. As it cools, the topping slowly seeps into the cake, creating a texture that's somewhere between a glaze and a soft chocolate caramel. Part of it settles on top, while part gently soaks into the crumb, making every bite richer, more chocolatey, and impossible to forget.

Simple, nostalgic, and unmistakably Brazilian, this is the carrot cake generations grew up loving.
