The Story Behind This Cake
Vovó Zefinha's Cake is the simplest cake we make and perhaps the most meaningful.
My grandmother, Zefinha, prepared this humble buttery cake for the guests staying at her small boarding house. With its golden crust, tender crumb, and comforting aroma, it was never meant to impress anyone. It was simply a gesture of hospitality, made to accompany a cup of coffee and make people feel at home.
As time went on, the cake became well known in her town. Local snack bars and cafés began ordering it to serve alongside coffee to their customers. There were no fillings, no frosting, and no elaborate decorations: just a simple homemade cake baked with care, exactly the way she always made it.
What made it special was never complexity. It was the delicate buttery flavour, the lightly crisp top that formed during baking, and the feeling that every slice came from someone's kitchen rather than a bakery.
Today, every bite brings me back to her table. It's a reminder that some of life's most meaningful things are also the simplest. More than a recipe, this cake is a way of keeping her memory alive and sharing a small piece of her kindness with others.

Every cake is lovingly handmade in a licensed commercial kitchen inspected by the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit. Every batch is prepared by a certified Food Handler following approved food safety practices. Some products contain tree nuts and other allergens. Although we carefully clean and sanitize all equipment between batches, our kitchen is not allergen-free.
